caughtthebulletWhen the boy went to Confession it wasn't because he'd been told to. Confess yourself to heaven, repent what's past, avoid what is to come. He knew someone would like him to and the last thing he wanted was to disappoint. He adjusted the way his blazer draped across his shoulders then entered the booth. He settled on the plush bench where the faithful were given an opportunity by a God who may or may not have heard them. They say he's watchful, that he knows the width of even the smallest crevice in the fold of a human heart, but he knows joy too, and rapture, and happiness. The boy was unsure to which he was confessing. At his next breath another shadow joined him. The boy fidgeted with his fingers. He was nervous. His company said not a word nor a single stutter but he could see the soft smile of patience.
Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.
No, that wasn't right at all, the boy thought to himself as the shadow settled between his knees. He brushed his hand through fair brown hair, shyly joyful, not yet raptured, but happy.
No, he wasn't sorry to begin with.

The mage was running as fast as his feet could carry him. Transporting himself wasn't possible because he didn't know where the others were and flying through the underground stronghold was out of the question unless he wanted to catch light from a torch or a spear through his side. Doing things the human way made his lungs want to burst but everyone had to know as soon as possible. He turned a left corner where there were only supplies, then he turned a right corner and the stout bearded men there were smithing weapons. Fortunately they told him where the mage could find his friends; the war council room. "Of course," he said to himself stupidly before proceeding in that direction. Along the way he wondered how he could break the news to them. Was it better to be leading and formal or informal and direct? They were royalty, after all. A well-thought out decision wasn't going to happen, he could see the archway coming up ahead.
He slowed his pace to think. Hey, you won't believe this but... It was a good start as any. He braced himself as he stepped into the room.
Then the mage froze in place. His eyes went wide at a sight that made him begin throbbing harder than he already was. They couldn't hear him, possibly too involved in each other to notice another party's arrival. Too involved to notice him wet his lips as the Prince sheathed the King's sword with his--
"I have a problem with this story," said the brunette.
"What do you mean," asked the mage.
"Well, because it's king now."
"Oh, sorry about that. Let me start over, and I hope you don't mind if I repeat myself."

"Look, being a doctor doesn't give you the right to have me over a barrel."
"Actually, it's a gurney."
